Aims and Mission
The library goal is to support the curriculum needs and to contribute to the quality of the overall learning experience of the University. It is to serve as a gateway to sources of information vital for teaching and research achievement. Background The library inception was in 1990 as an integral and central component of the University. Being an academic library, its services are geared towards its immediate users, namely faculty and students.
The library holds diversified collection that covers the needs of research and teaching purposes of the University. The subject coverage includes: Computer science, Computer engineering, Information technology, Telecommunication, Architecture and Design, Creative multimedia, Knowledge engineering, Knowledge management, GIS / RS (Geo-informatics) and Electronic engineering. It is expected that 14 new areas of specialization are going to be Introduced during the academic year 2011 / 2012 . The books stock amounts to 4000 volumes in Arabic and 16239 volumes in English. it holds about 1000 graduation projects and 20 journals titles. A sizeable collection of materials are available in e-formats besides e-databases.
Location and Space
The library is housed in the third floor on the west side of the South building of the University. Its area is 450 squ./meter, seating capacity is 350 chairs together with 40 reading tables and Shelving is of 60 shelves (single and double face).
Remote Access to Information Resources
Information resources are not limited to the in-house collection since the library has access to wider resources e.g Encyclopedia of life science and support system (EOLSS) , EBSCO , Agora , Hinari , Oare , Ardi , Eifl , Knowledge with Boundaries , Royal Society Journals And Archive , Springer Open Access Journals. INTERNET facility is available for all patrons for use free of charge.
The library renders a wide range of services to satisfy user's needs. The services include users guidance, reference works, borrowing and photocopying. The library adopts open shelves policy to enable patrons to interact directly with the collection. There is a reservation service for books on demand. Other services are in progress e.g current Awareness service (CAS) and Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI).
The library started automation in 2007 by using a Library Information System (LIS) known as WINISIS which is a UNESCO product. WINISIS is an arabized and integrated system that accommodates all library operations. However, in 2010 the LIS is converted into a new more developed open- source system . This is an in-house system developed by the FU CESD.
On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC)
All the library holdings are entered in the LIS as a bibliographic database. Searching and browsing is accessible from within the Campus or remotely since the LIS is web-based. OPAC has 3 main access points available for searching, namely, Author, Title and Subject. The Query capability is powerful and user friendly.
Organization of Knowledge (Cat & Class)
The Library adopts Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) and library of the Congress List of Subject Headings as tools for processing materials in English. The Arabic equivalents of those tools are used for cataloging and classification of materials in Arabic.
